5 common mistakes to avoid when using a deodorant

You may be thinking, what is so complicated about using a simple product like a deodorant? But misapplying it can affect the product’s ability to keep your underarms free of odor. You may have been using the product ineffectively without even realizing it and might end up switching brands till you find the right one. Here are five common mistakes you can avoid making while using deodorant and reap its benefits.

Buying the wrong product
Not only are there several types of deodorant available on the market, but deodorants and antiperspirants are two distinct types of formulas. Antiperspirants block sweat pores and some contain fragrances that effectively neutralize the odor. But deodorants are products that actively balance the smell and do nothing about excessive sweating. It is possible to use these products interchangeably throughout the day. So, don’t waste money on deodorants when your problem is sweating. Check with a dermatologist to find a suitable product that serves your purpose.

Applying at the wrong time
Most people use deodorant to mask the odor before heading out. But sweating profusely en route can numb the fragrance and inactive its purpose. Experts suggest applying deodorant after taking an evening shower and once before going to bed. At night, the body doesn’t release excess sweat allowing the deodorant formula to work its magic. It is also not advisable to apply deodorant after shaving underarms as the razor blade exposes the upper derma after shaving, making it extra sensitive to chemicals, otherwise doing so could cause bruising, redness, and pain.

Forgetting to moisturize
Moisturizing the skin keeps the derma hydrated and less prone to irritation when you apply a strong deodorant. Since most products contain concentrated alcohol and artificial fragrances, some skin irritation is expected with regular use. However, applying a gentle layer of moisturizer in the morning can soften the skin and lower the risk of infection. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil or cream are suitable substitutes for chemical ones.

Not considering skin sensitivity
Every individual must take their skin sensitivity seriously. And artificial fragrances are the real culprits for triggering an allergic reaction or causing irritation when used regularly. Also, deodorants that contain aluminum salts, perfume, or coloring dyes can further irritate the skin. Dermatologists recommend using natural deodorants made from organic plant-based materials to minimize irritation. Commercial deodorants are also available in skin-safe formulas free of parabens, chemicals, preservatives, and artificial fragrances and are suitable for all skin types.

Not using deodorant daily
Some people don’t have to apply deodorant every day. But if body odor builds up rapidly with the shortest amount of exertion or physical activity, dermatologists recommend using a mild strength deo every day. Usage also depends on the varying formulations of assorted products. Since some deodorants and antiperspirants are designed to last 24-48 hours, you can skip applying them daily. But milder formulas and organic fragrance-free formulas may not be that effective. Read the instructions to find the best way to apply and use it. Also, if any irritation or changes in skin tone develop due to persistent use, immediately consult a dermatologist to find suitable alternatives.
